Description

Are you looking for a seasonal job that allows you to work primarily outdoors and utilize your maintenance skills to upkeep the City's various athletic fields? If so, apply to the City of Harrisonburg's seasonal Athletic Fields Grounds Crew Worker position!

The Athletic Fields Grounds Crew Worker position is a seasonal position (no benefits) with a preferred hiring rate of $14.63 per hour. The ideal candidates for this position will perform a variety of manual labor work in the care and maintenance of athletic facilities.

This position is budgeted for work hours through October 2024. All applicants are encouraged to apply regardless of availability to work through the end of October 2024.

As an Athletic Fields Grounds Crew Worker, you'll be responsible for the following:

  • Mowing/edging of athletic fields;

  • Dragging and lining of athletic fields;

  • Rebuilding of mounds and home plate areas with clay;

  • Collecting trash;

  • Watering of athletic fields;

  • Using a variety of equipment and power tools, including but not limited to lawn mowers, blowers, trimmers, edgers, and power-washers.

Physical Requirements: This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of the tenth grade or equivalent combination of education and experience. High school diploma or GED, preferred.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age prior to hire date, approximately 3 weeks after initial application date.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

  • Experience in athletic field maintenance or experience as a former athlete is preferred but not required.

The ideal candidates for this position will have:

  • Some knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment assigned;

  • Skill in the use of hand tools and equipment assigned;

  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.

The selected candidates for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:

  • DMV record review;

  • Job-specific physical; and

  • Criminal background check.
