WSP USA Air Quality Specialist (Intermediate to Senior) in Vancouver, British Columbia

The Opportunity:

WSP is currently seeking an Intermediate to Senior Air Quality Specialist to join our Vancouver team to manage and deliver our Air Quality team’s field programs. There is also an opportunity to support the wider WSP Environmental Management team with noise monitoring, construction monitoring, erosion and sediment control and other environmental programs as required. The role will see a mix of office based and field work with requirements to complete routine reporting. For this position you will be working with a variety of Project Managers, Environmental Scientists and Engineers to participate in and manage field work, data analysis, and report preparation.

What you can expect to do here:

As an Air Quality Specialist, you will deal with all types of air pollution that can affect every aspect of our environment. You will monitor, assess, and report on ambient air quality in both urban and rural areas. Your job will be to measure air pollutants so that accurate assessments can be made with respect to the effects of the pollutants on humans and the environment. The work you will manage and participate in will see you:

  • Observe, record, and report atmospheric and weather information to help track air pollution.

  • Operate and calibrate monitoring equipment to measure air pollution and show how it is distributed throughout the atmosphere.

  • Maintain, repair, and audit air pollution and meteorological equipment.

  • Lead and assist in developing air quality monitoring and management plans.

  • Determine what type of sampling, measuring, and/or monitoring equipment will be used depending on what the pollutant is and its quantity and location.

  • Measure meteorological parameters such as wind speed, wind direction, pressure, and humidity.

  • Respond to complaints and/or concerns about air quality from individuals in the community or workplace.

  • Ensure safety training has been completed and safety rules are followed.

  • Communicate both orally and through written reports results of studies, field experiments, or ongoing monitoring to clients, peers, supervisors, committee members, and the public.

  • Ensure proper quality assurance/quality control procedures are performed on instrumentation, including maintenance and calibration.

  • Work with scientists to coordinate field experiments and studies in air quality.

  • Implement new air monitoring technology.

  • Support surface water and noise monitoring requirements as required.

What you'll bring to WSP:

  • A degree or technical diploma in Environmental Technology, Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Environmental Science, or other related disciplines.

  • 4+ years of experience operating and maintaining air quality or other environmental monitoring equipment.

  • Experience mentoring, coaching, and managing staff.

  • Training or aptitude with electronics and instrumentation and familiar and comfortable using standard hand tools relevant to the job.

  • Ability to lift 30-50lb / 13-22Kg of equipment or supplies on the job.

  • Experience with indoor air, industrial hygiene, and noise monitoring experience would also be an asset.

  • Flexible, solution-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently or in a team environment.

  • Excellent English communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Access.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Active enjoyment of outdoors, in all seasons and weather.

The actual salaries offered for more senior candidates may vary and are subject to negotiation based on factors such as experience, qualifications and market conditions.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $72,600 to $123,400
