Job Description

The Applications & Systems (A&S) group in the Research & Innovation department of Veolia WTS is looking for a Senior Researcher who has a background in wastewater treatment design/modeling and experience in the development of data driven/hybrid models (Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence) in this field.

The Senior Researcher will be responsible to explore, align, coordinate and lead hybrid modeling developments in our research group, combining existing datasets and new mechanistic models with data driven models, around ZeeWeed-MBR and ZeeLung-MABR products and applications. The applied research will cover a wide range of subjects such as biological selection, physical bioselection, suspended/biofilm growths, gas molecular diffusion and ultrafiltration membranes, including GHG emissions assessments with existing and new biologies. The new researcher will collaborate with R&D project managers/program leaders and implement gap analysis from extensive datasets to find new ways to predict and increase performance (opex, GHG, capex, resilience…) with hybrid/data driven models (DL, ML, AI), from existing datasets or/and by coupling it with mechanistics models (from monitoring, calibration to control).

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Partner with members of the A&S Biology group to analyze and identify from existing datasets, mechanistic models and current/new applications where data driven models may provide most benefits

• Explore, shape and prioritize Data driven/hybrid/AI-ML-DL development opportunities around Veolia WTS’ core products and applications to initiate research program(s) and new offerings by aligning with A&S leadership with the focus on decarbonizing wastewater treatment systems (GHG such as N2O EF, CH4 EF…), improving competitiveness (opex, capex) and de-risk project designs (resilience)

• Define value proposition drivers (opex, GHG, capex, resilience…) and coordinate ideation internally with multifunctional teams (technology, services, engineering, product, incubation, sales…)

• Build, elaborate and coordinate value proposition of new Data driven/hybrid/AI-ML-DL program R&D proposals; prepare and participate in the approval process (internal) and fund raising when necessary (external)

• Lead execution of new research projects/programs by coordinating with internal (product management, engineering, services, regions) and external (academics, operators, consultants, open innovation partners, services contractors…) stakeholders

• Structure follow-up, reporting and deliverables to achieve program’s objectives in time and budget as aligned with A&S leadership

• Support commercialization internally and externally by collaborating with incubation/regions

Qualifications

Required:

• Master degree in in Water, Environmental Sciences and/or related fields

• First hand experience(s) with both mechanistic and data driven (ML, AI) modeling in the field of Water treatment (academic, operation, consulting or technology practitioners)

• 8+ years of experience in the wastewater treatment or related industry

Preferred:

• PhD, Postdoctoral experience in Water Treatment fields (wastewater a plus)

• Proven network in the water professional ecosystem (academics, consultants, utilities)

Working Conditions:

• 80% Oakville office as per WTS Canada rules (2 days/week home office)

• 20% travel to customer site, pilots, conferences
