Systems Staff Engineer

Position Summary

Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.

As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. 

User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU's nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report..

Position Overview

  • Lead systems engineering tasks for major projects 
  • Support FMEAs and writing procedures, requirements, and interface documents 
  • Oversee and continuously improve the laboratory's Configuration Management Program 
  • Manage the change request system and other configuration control processes 
  • Assist in managing the laboratory's Functional Safety Program 
  • Review and edit hazard assessments, safety requirements specifications, and validation plans 
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in internal design and safety reviews 
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of systems engineering, configuration management, and/or functional safety
  • Knowledge of and strict adherence to safety programs, OSHA, and all related rules, regulations, and procedures which apply to this position's responsibilities.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to problem-solve and demonstrate sound critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.

Required Degree

Masters -Systems Engineering or Electrical Engine

Minimum Requirements
  • Master's degree in Systems Engineering or Electrical Engineering with at least three years of industry experience.
  • Successful record of accomplishment in field of expertise
  • Experience with systems engineering, configuration management, or functional safety
Desired Qualifications
  • Five years of experience performing systems engineering or engineering program management
  • Working knowledge of electronic safety systems and IEC 61508 / IEC 61511
  • Basic understanding of vacuum systems, power supplies, RF, cryogenic systems, PLC based controls
  • Able to obtain a Professional Engineer license in Michigan within two years
