The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program at Binghamton University is one of TRIO's college retention programs funded by the United States Department of Education. SSS at Binghamton demonstrates that earning a quality education and achieving life-long success is not limited by financial status, background, or disability. Our SSS program aims to increase retention and graduation of first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) students and/or students with disabilities.

SSS is seeking an Academic Counselor who is committed to this mission, and has experience advising, mentoring, teaching and/or tutoring students of diverse backgrounds. Successful candidates possess the drive and skills necessary to develop meaningful relationships with students, staff, faculty, and the University community to support the success of program participants.

Essential Duties

Academic Counsel and Advisement

  • Provide academic, career, financial and personal counseling to program participants

  • Maintain timely, accurate and detailed student records

  • Providing regular outreach to your assigned caseload of students

  • Make referrals to appropriate SSS and campus resources

  • Assist participants with planning for postgraduate studies and/or employment

Teaching

  • May teach the following, depending on applicant qualifications: WRIT 100, a supplemental instruction course in writing; UNIV 103, a first-year experience course; and/or WTSN 301, a graduate school prep course.

  • Utilize technology to teach an online workshop (soft skill developmental topics) offered to SSS Summer Program (S4P) participants

Programming

  • Design and implement SSS and SSS-STEM programming to enhance the academic, career, and personal development of program participants

  • Contribute to the development of our summer bridge program, S4P, by developing and delivering workshops and seminars

  • Assist in planning special events such as award ceremonies, National TRIO Day, and others

Travel/Professional Development Activities

  • Individual is expected to attend at least one regional or national conference each grant year as the budget allows

  • Relevant University professional development attendance is also expected

Correspondence

  • Generate correspondence related to advising caseload, including drafting recommendation letters for scholarships, employment, and graduate/professional school applications

  • Work Hours - Will work occasional weekend and evening hours as assigned. Will work extended hours during S4P.

  • University Committees - May be asked to sit on University committees to enhance the visibility of TRIO and allow opportunities to advocate for TRIO students.

    Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Education, Teaching, Social Work, Student Affairs Administration, Counseling, or closely related field

  • Experience advising, mentoring, teaching and/or tutoring

  • Demonstrated experience working with students

  • Ability to work on a team and work effectively with the Senior Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Director, co-workers, and the University Community

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to effectively advocate for FGLI students

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in overcoming barriers similar to TRIO SSS participants

  • Prior experience working in TRIO or other opportunity programs

  • Experience counseling, advising, and/or mentoring FGLI college students

    Additional Information:

Salary: $52,000 - 55,000 annually
