Job Summary and Qualifications

Position Summary: This position supports the mission of The Medical Center of Aurora/Centennial Hospital of optimizing the quality of life of all those served by expanding beyond the traditional focus on medical needs to the needs of the whole person. Skilled work in this area is an active treatment, provided both inpatient and outpatient, offering individualized assessment, treatment planning, treatment implementation, and evaluation to restore, remediate or rehabilitate specific aspects of physical, cognitive, emotional or social functioning to assist patients in improving their overall functioning and independence in life activities. Conducts evidence-based assessment including structured interview, direct observation, information from others and/or record review to generate age, diagnostic and culturally appropriate baseline data that identifies the patient’s strengths and limitations in physical, cognitive, social and emotional functioning as well as behavioral functioning and interests in leisure/play. Collaborates with patient, family and/or significant others as appropriates and conducts assessment in a timely manner, in accordance with standards of HCA and TJC. Reports and documents a summary of the assessment results that contact information relative to the patient’s strengths, limitations, and summary of functional status. Based upon the analysis of assessment data, the recreational therapist formulates clinical impressions and recommendations for treatment, and referral for other services, if needed. Interprets assessment findings, collaborates with the patient, multidisciplinary team members as needed to develop the individualized recreational therapy treatment plan that includes patient preferences, short-term, long-term and/or discharge related functional outcome goals and the treatment interventions to be used to achieve treatment goals. Facilitates group therapy sessions to provide psychoeducation and treatment implementation for patients. Documentation of group therapy sessions is completed in a timely and thorough manner. Participation in bi-weekly team huddle. When need arises, will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

II. Position Requirements:

A. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) Certification; BLS-Healthcare provider through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, CPI certification within 6 months of hire and re-certification every 2 years after.

B. Education: Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or a closely related field required.

C. Experience: Two to three years of clinical/direct behavioral healthcare experience with minimum of one year in an acute care setting required.

D. Special Qualifications: Must have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and able to work with a highly diverse population. Must be knowledgeable of ADAD and TJC standards. Must be knowledgeable of behavioral health evaluation and consultation processes. Must have ability to perform recreational therapy practices, methods, techniques, and opportunities for recreational therapist to collaborate with other health care disciplines to improve patient functioning and independence. multiple tasks simultaneously and work in high stress environment. Must be able to apply critical thinking and formulate diagnostic impressions based upon review of systems, history, symptoms and current presentation. Must be able to provide crisis intervention and utilize system resources/referrals.

III. Degree of supervision required: Involves general guidance and direction by the Director of Behavioral Health Services. Employee will be expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
